Week One: Why Faith Comes First

Have you ever wanted to know how everything will turn out before you take the first step? Sometimes we all do. But following Jesus begins with trusting Him, even when we still have questions. As we walk with Him, God’s Holy Spirit helps us learn and understand more. We do not have to know everything before we begin. We can begin with faith.

The First Step

One evening at the Monkey Ranch, a child stood at the beginning of a winding path. The porchlight glowed in the distance, but the child could not see every turn.

“What if I don’t know the whole way?” the child asked.

Boss Monkey smiled. “You don’t have to see every turn from here. Take the first step, and we’ll walk together.”

The child stepped forward. Around the bend, the next part of the path came into view.

Trusting Jesus can feel like that. We may still have questions, but we can take the first step toward Him. As we walk with Him, the Holy Spirit helps us learn.

What Jesus Promised

Jesus knew His followers would still have questions. He promised that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to be with them, teach them, and remind them of what Jesus had said. Read John 14:16–17 and John 14:26 together.

Jesus did not tell His friends they had to understand everything first. He invited them to trust Him and keep following. We can bring our questions to Jesus, too. The Holy Spirit helps us grow as we walk with Him.

  1. Why did the child on the path feel unsure?
  2. What helped the child take the first step?
  3. What is one question you would like to ask Jesus about? You can talk about it with a parent or another trusted grown-up, and you can pray about it, too.

Try It This Week

Draw a winding path on a piece of paper. At the beginning, write: “I can trust Jesus.” You do not need to draw where every turn leads. Add one step at a time.

Tell a parent or another trusted grown-up about something you are still learning or wondering about. Then pray together and ask God to help you take the next faithful step.

A Prayer for This Week

Dear God, I do not know everything, and sometimes I feel unsure. Thank You for inviting me to come to Jesus with my questions. Help me trust Him and take the next step. Teach me through Your Word, and help me listen as Your Holy Spirit guides me. Amen.

Remember This

I do not need every answer before I take the first step. I can trust Jesus and keep walking with Him.
